In 2024, Welles garnered attention on social media for writing and performing folk protest songs, including “The Poor,” “Cancer,” “The Olympics,” “United Health,” “Join ICE” and “War Isn’t Murder,” a song about the Gaza war. Vulture has described his music as “a mix of old-fashioned folkie signifiers and trending-topic populism.”

Described as a modern Woody Guthrie, Welles received four nominations at the 2026 Grammy Awards, including Best Americana Album for Middle. The album is an introspective folk-rock album filled with abstract, surreal, and darkly funny reflections on power and culture.
