Aside from this blog, this music would otherwise remained unknown outside of South Africa, apart from the most hardcore of digger and record collector. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e‘Modiehi’\u003c\/em\u003e was originally released on Spades Record in 1982 and was recorded by producer \u003cem\u003eWest Nkosi,\u003c\/em\u003e who was a member of supergroup ‘\u003cem\u003eMahlathini \u0026amp; The Mahotella Queens’.\u003c\/em\u003e He worked with the big hitters in South African music such as\u003cem\u003e Ladysmith Black Mambazo\u003c\/em\u003e, \u003cem\u003eTeaspoon \u0026amp; The Waves, Patience Africa\u003c\/em\u003e and many more. \u003cem\u003eMarumo\u003c\/em\u003e were made up of a group of musicians from the Athlone School for the blind in Bellville, close to Cape Town. The band members,\u003cem\u003e John Mothopeng, Munich Sibiya, Simon Falatsi and Marks Mbuthuma\u003c\/em\u003e, had previously played in the groups\u003cem\u003e Batsumi, All Rounders\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eThe Orations\u003c\/em\u003e and came together to record this versatile album. It covers a wide number of genres from Sotho soul, Mbaqanga, disco-funk, gospel \u0026amp; spacey-synth slow jams.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlash forward 30 or so years later and lost dead-stock copies of the album start to appear and \u003cem\u003eMarumo’s\u003c\/em\u003e music begins to be heard across the world in the DJ sets of \u003cem\u003eMotor City Drum Ensemble, Invisible City Editions, Floating Points, DJ Okapi \u003c\/em\u003eand others.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe included the afro-disco-funk beauty of\u003cem\u003e 'Khomo Tsaka Deile Kae?’\u003c\/em\u003e on our Mr Bongo Record Club Volume Three compilation, but felt \u003cem\u003e‘Modiehi’\u003c\/em\u003e needed to be available and heard in its entirety.
